Levels of leadership influence

CannonThere are five levels of influence in leadership, according to Chris Brady and Orrin Woodward in their book Launching a Leadership Revolution. The levels are learn, perform, lead, develop leaders, and develop leaders who develop leaders. The book aims to provide a guide for developing leadership ability by working through the five levels.

The authors assert that before anyone can commence on the path to leadership growth, he or she must be hungry, hone-able and honorable. The work of a leader is defined by a cycle which contains the elements vision, goal setting, game planning, working and seeking counsel. The quality of a person’s leadership can be measured on the Trilateral Leadership Ledger®, which involves the candidate self-assessing on a scale of 1 to 10 his or her character, tasks and relationships. The three values are multiplied together to give a Leadership Effectiveness score.

I must confess to some scepticism about the usefulness of the Trilateral Leadership Ledger, as it seems unlikely to reveal any weaknesses of which the candidate was unaware. I am also inclined to doubt the complete accuracy of some of the historical illustrations used in the book, and on the whole I felt that just about everything covered in the book is already covered in other books. I think the book has a great title, but I do not feel empowered to launch a revolution after reading it.
