Money is not worth it

Money stinksMoney inevitably brings you trouble. Winners of large lotteries typically find that over the long run the win results in a significantly negative net effect on their lives. They tend to spend the money quickly, and end up with nothing to show for it. People with money need to worry about their security from robbers. They need to worry about losing their money to conmen or poor investments. They need to worry about spending it wisely. But these are all problems that most people wouldn’t mind having.

A more serious problem from the point of view of Jesus is that money will keep you out of the kingdom of God. In Mark chapter 10, Jesus said, “It is really difficult for people who have riches to enter the kingdom of God!” If you want to get into God’s kingdom, then you have to do so without your money. If you want the security that money brings, then you can’t get into God’s kingdom.

If you want to enjoy a comfortable lifestyle with all the benefits that money can buy, then you have a perfect right to do so: the choice is yours. But you need to know that when you choose in favour of money you are choosing against God’s kingdom, and, if you believe that what Jesus said might be true, your choice of a few brief years of wealth on earth is a poor substitute for a forever-life in God’s kingdom.
