The Invitation

DinnerWhat are you working for? Most people would struggle to answer that question. They might say that they are working to earn money, so that they can afford to buy and do the things which make life meaningful. But what are those things which make life meaningful, and if you haven’t worked out in advance who or what makes life meaningful, how are you going to recognise it when your life’s purpose floats by and beckons you to follow?

If the most powerful and interesting person in the world invited you to dinner, would you go? Most people probably wouldn’t, because they would be busy doing the things they do every day because they are working so hard to make their lives meaningful that they would fail to recognise when a real opportunity to add meaning presented itself. That’s roughly how it was with the wedding guests in Matthew chapter 22. The king invited them, but they were too busy living their ordinary lives to accept an extraordinary invitation.

Which leads us back to the question: When the time comes, are you going to recognise God’s call to step out of the mundane and truly become the person you were created to be, or are you going to keep on doing what you’ve always been doing, simply because you have never taken the time to work out in advance how to distinguish the voice of the Creator of the Universe from the millions of noises which surround you every day?
