God’s rest

Genesis 2 tells us that on the seventh day of creation God rested. “God’s rest” is a state in which God looks at and enjoys all that he has created. It is a state which people who are in restored relationship with God can share with God. In the Old Testament, God said that the Israelites who rebelled against him in the wilderness would never enter his rest. The writer of the Letter to the Hebrews expands on this in chapter 4:

Let us be careful that none of you should seem to fall short of the promise of entering his rest. We have had the good news explained to us, just as they had, but the message they heard did not benefit them, because the people who heard it did not combine it with faith. We who have believed do enter that rest… People who enter God’s rest also rest from their own work, as God did from his. We should do our best to enter that rest, and make sure that no-one falls into that same pattern of disobedience.

So what do you have to do to enter God’s rest? That can be done by putting your faith in Jesus Christ, whose death on the cross atoned for sins and made possible a restored relationship with God. Once you believe, you get to experience some of God’s rest here and now, although the full experience of God’s rest awaits the world to come.
