Why Christians are compliant

It seems odd that the followers of a revolutionary should turn out to be fairly compliant people. Jesus always seemed to be upsetting the authorities and disturbing traditional values, and yet he taught his followers to submit to the authorities, to turn the other cheek when struck or insulted, and to travel the extra mile when service is demanded. As Paul said in the third chapter of his letter to Titus:

Remind people to submit to rulers and authorities, be obedient, be ready to do what is right, avoid insulting anyone, be conciliatory and kind, and show courtesy towards everyone. Once we were also stupid, disobedient and misguided, slaves to various desires and pleasures, living in evil and jealousy, contemptible, and hating each other. But when the kindness of God our Saviour and his love towards humans appeared, he saved us, not because we had done righteous things, but because of his mercy, through the washing of rebirth and renewing by the Holy Spirit.

So are Christians supposed to be compliant? In many ways we are. We are supposed to be conciliatory and kind, ready to do what is right, and avoid insulting anyone. The waves we create are not supposed to arise from our own selfishness or lack of self control; they are supposed to arise from the nature of the revolutionary message of the gospel which we bear.
