Staying out of the darkness

The only real way to solve a problem is to bring it into the light. If you do things that you would be embarrassed about if others found out, then you are likely to be spending a lot of your energy in trying to cover things up. If, on the other hand, you live a life of integrity, you will not have to try to hide things. There is nothing to be embarrassed about if you avoid doing things that you would be ashamed of. As Paul said in the fifth chapter of his letter to the Ephesians:

Live as children of light, because the light produces all goodness and righteousness and truth. Discover how to delight the Lord. Do not get involved with unfruitful works of darkness. Instead, expose them to the light. It is embarrassing even to speak about the things which those people do in secret. But everything which is exposed to the light can be seen. Light shows up everything, which is why it is said, “Awake, you who sleep. Rise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you.”

The problem is that there are so many forces urging us to step aside from the straight path, take some shortcuts, and go for some quick and easy gratification with very little risk that anyone will find out. Everyone else seems to do it. But once you give in, you start having to do things to cover your tracks and life starts getting uncomfortable. Instead, it is much better to heed Paul’s advice to live as children of light.
