Even the poor can choose to be generous

It is not always the wealthy that are the most generous. In the 8th chapter of his second letter to the Corinthians, Paul wrote:

“Friends, we want you to know about the grace of God which has been given to the churches of Macedonia. In spite of their serious difficulties, their overflowing joy and their deep poverty have resulted in a rich outpouring of generosity. They willingly gave as much as they were able, and even more than they were able, pleading with us for the privilege of sharing in serving the believers. They went beyond our expectations, firstly giving themselves to the Lord and to us for whatever direction God would lead.”

Why would people who faced serious difficulties and deep poverty have shown a high degree of generosity? Most people would see a lack of resources as a reason not to give anything. Other people can give of their surplus, but people with very little should keep what they have. However, that is not how the Macedonians saw it. Perhaps they thought of everything they had as belonging to God, so that their job was simply to invest those resources as God’s stewards, in the wisest manner possible. Perhaps wise investment choices become even more important when you have very little to invest. They could have chosen to keep the money for their own needs, but seeing the way in which God was blessing Paul’s ministry, they decided the wisest investment was to be generous towards him.
