What to do when bad things happen

In Acts chapter 28 we find Paul imprisoned in Rome. Life has not been kind to him for a while now. To recap his recent past, he was in Jerusalem when some rabble rousers stirred up a mob against him and he got arrested. He only just saved himself from a flogging when he explained to the soldiers that he was a Roman citizen. The commanding officer of the local regiment had a rough way of finding out what he was guilty of, involving a face to face argument between Paul and the Jewish leaders, which almost resulted in Paul being pulled apart.

Then governor Felix tried him and found him not guilty but still held him in prison for two years, waiting for a bribe. Then governor Festus tried him again and found him not guilty again but still wanted to hand him over to his enemies, so Paul had to appeal to the emperor. Then the ship in which he was travelling had fallen into the middle of an enormous storm which lasted for two weeks and ended with a shipwreck. After scrambling ashore and collapsing exhausted on the beach, a snake bit Paul.

If that is how God treats his most loyal servants, then being God’s servant does not seem like a very enticing job. But Paul did not seem to be complaining. Instead, he seemed to regard every hardship as an opportunity to grow closer to God and to bring others closer to God.
