Faith requires courage

ananias-meets-saulWhat do you do when a man who wants to arrest you and have you flogged and executed arrives in your town? I personally would be more interested in lying low or getting away to a safe place than going round to have a chat with him. But Acts chapter 9 describes a vision that Ananias had, in which Jesus told him to go and meet Saul, who had just arrived in Damascus on a mission to arrest, persecute and kill Christians.

It is hard to imagine the level of courage that Ananias must have had, and the thoughts which must have been going through his mind, as he walked towards the house where he was to meet Saul. One of the most difficult things to believe is that God can and does change people. Young angry people usually turn into old angry people. It seems so rare for an enemy to become a friend that we tend to forget that it can happen at all.

The natural reaction of most people to conflict is to do anything they can to avoid it. Hide. Procrastinate. However, in most cases the best way to resolve conflict is to address the issues and negotiate as soon as possible; hiding or ignoring problems usually makes them worse. It seems counterintuitive, but if you want to be a person of peace, you have to have the courage to face the conflict and work through it.
